Merritt Island is listed at 6-0 and Titusville at 4-2 after the Mustangs’ 39-16 win, according to both teams’ MaxPreps varsity football pages checked September 26. For local fans, the useful comparison is not just the score: the teams share 3A District 8, but their overall records, district records and rankings measure different things.
The district picture
MaxPreps lists Merritt Island at 2-0 in district games and Titusville at 1-1. Those are separate from their 6-0 and 4-2 overall records. The district record is the narrower comparison when following these two teams through league play; the overall record includes the rest of the schedule.
What the rankings do—and do not—tell us
The MaxPreps rankings dated September 24 list Merritt Island No. 26 in Florida and No. 4 in Florida Division 3A. Titusville is No. 128 statewide and No. 17 in Division 3A. Treat those as a dated comparison, not a claim that the latest result has already moved either team up or down.
There is also a distinction between a ranking and a postseason selection. FHSAA says football’s eight Open Division teams will be selected using MaxPreps rankings at the end of the regular season. September positions are not that final selection.
