Eau Gallie–Titusville leads Brevard’s Friday football watch list
A meeting of 2–1 district teams, unbeaten Merritt Island’s road trip and MCC’s visit to Pahokee lead the October 16 slate of 12 games.
Eau Gallie and Titusville meet Friday, Oct. 16, with matching 2–1 records in Class 3A, District 8. The 7 p.m. game at Titusville puts the Commodores, 4–3 overall, against the 6–2 Terriers, whose last two wins have come by a combined 84–19.
That direct district meeting leads Friday’s Brevard football watch list. Unbeaten Merritt Island visits Palm Bay, Melbourne Central Catholic travels to Pahokee, and Cocoa crosses town to Space Coast. The Friday slate has 12 varsity games involving county teams, including road trips. Records and results below are from MaxPreps schedules checked Thursday, Oct. 15.
Eau Gallie at Titusville — 7 p.m.
Eau Gallie came within a point of Merritt Island last week, losing 36–35 in overtime. Titusville lost its earlier meeting with the Mustangs 39–16, then beat Davenport 43–6 and Rockledge 41–13. Both Friday opponents have also beaten Rockledge: Eau Gallie won that matchup 47–0 in September.
The question is whether Titusville can carry its recent scoring into a game against a team that shut out Rockledge and Astronaut and limited Cocoa to 14 points. Eau Gallie’s close finish against Merritt Island offers a different comparison from the overall records, but the games occurred on different dates against different schedules. A win would give either team a third district victory.
Merritt Island is listed at 3–0 in the district entering its Palm Bay game. FHSAA counts games against district opponents in those standings; its football manual uses the final MaxPreps rankings separately for regional seeding and selection of the eight-team Open Division. Friday’s district records are not assigned playoff seeds.
Other games to watch
Merritt Island at Palm Bay — 7 p.m., Melbourne
The Mustangs are 7–0 after their overtime win at Eau Gallie and have scored at least 35 team points in every game. Palm Bay is 2–5, with a 50–0 win over Cocoa Beach followed by a 35–0 loss to Astronaut. Merritt Island beat Astronaut 45–0, giving the teams another shared opponent to consider.
For Palm Bay, the challenge is to produce more consistently against another district opponent. The Pirates are 0–3 in district play, while Merritt Island has two district dates left, at Palm Bay and then at home against Rockledge.
Melbourne Central Catholic at Pahokee — 7 p.m., Pahokee High School
MCC returns from an idle week at 5–1 after three consecutive wins, most recently 21–10 over Rockledge on Oct. 2. Pahokee is 4–3 and lost 22–7 at Vero Beach last week. Both teams have beaten Benjamin: MCC 35–28 in August and Pahokee 33–3 in September.
Benjamin is one point of comparison, with those games played several weeks apart. Watch whether the Hustlers can extend their three-game winning run against a Pahokee team that has also played close losses to Atlantic, 21–17, and John Carroll Catholic, 23–20.
Cocoa at Space Coast — 7 p.m., Cocoa
Cocoa, 2–4, and Space Coast, 6–2, arrive after shutout wins: the Tigers beat Centennial 48–0 and the Vipers beat Cocoa Beach 35–0. Space Coast’s previous game was a 29–18 loss to Astronaut. The local matchup tests whether the Vipers can turn last week’s rebound into consecutive wins against another county opponent.
Viera at Lake Howell and Melbourne at East River — both 7 p.m.
Viera, 3–4 overall and 1–2 in Class 5A, District 5, goes to Winter Park to face Lake Howell, 4–3 and 2–1. Both recently lost to Melbourne: Viera 42–13 on Oct. 2 and Lake Howell 42–35 on Oct. 9. Viera is seeking to end a three-game losing streak; the question is whether it can close the gap shown in those separate meetings with the Bulldogs.
Melbourne, 5–2 and 2–1 in the same district, visits East River in Orlando. The Bulldogs have won three straight, scoring 49, 42 and 42 points. East River is 0–7, but its latest game was a 3–0 overtime loss to Lyman. That recent low-scoring result gives the Bulldogs a different reference point from East River’s overall record.
