Merritt Island–Eau Gallie leads Brevard’s Friday football slate
Two unbeaten district records meet in Melbourne, Heritage faces Jensen Beach, and Calvary Chapel visits unbeaten Merritt Island Christian. A guide to all 11 Brevard varsity games on Oct. 9.
Merritt Island takes a 6-0 record to Eau Gallie on Friday, Oct. 9, with both teams 2-0 in Class 3A, District 8. That combination of an unbeaten season and a direct district challenge makes the 7 p.m. game in Melbourne the first stop on Brevard’s football watch list.
The Oct. 5–11 county slate has 11 varsity games, all Friday, including six matchups between Brevard teams. Melbourne Central Catholic is idle. Records and recent results below are from MaxPreps, with Merritt Island’s school schedule also confirming the Mustangs’ record and road date.
Merritt Island at Eau Gallie: the district test
Merritt Island has scored at least 35 points in each of its six wins. Eau Gallie, 4-2 overall, has allowed just 14 points across its last three games: a 47-0 win over Rockledge, 28-14 over Cocoa and 38-0 over Astronaut. Both teams also beat Astronaut and Cocoa, giving this matchup more useful points of comparison than the overall records alone.
The question to watch is whether Eau Gallie can keep the Mustangs below the scoring pace they have sustained against a schedule that includes Melbourne and Ponte Vedra. If the Commodores continue their recent run of limiting points, Merritt Island will have to win a different kind of game from its first six. The result also adds a head-to-head result to a district race in which both still have two district games scheduled afterward.
Under the FHSAA’s 2026–27 rules, district records count games against district opponents, and head-to-head decides a final two-team tie for first. The final MaxPreps rankings have a separate role in postseason seeding; they also select the eight-team Open Division. A district record is not a playoff seed.
Other games to watch
Jensen Beach at Heritage, 7 p.m.: Heritage is 4-3 overall but 3-0 in Class 4A, District 13; Jensen Beach is 4-2 and 2-0 in the district. Heritage’s three district wins have come by a combined 115-0, against Legacy, Fort Pierce Westwood and Sebastian River. Jensen Beach shut out Sebastian River and Port St. Lucie by a combined 83-0. Those results make this a test of whether either team can sustain that control against another unbeaten district opponent, rather than a matchup to judge by Heritage’s three overall losses.
Calvary Chapel Academy at Merritt Island Christian: the county’s unbeaten eight-man meeting pairs the 6-0 Eagles with the 7-0 Cougars. Calvary has allowed 28 points in six games, including four shutouts. Both beat Lake Mary Prep: Calvary 36-0 and Merritt Island Christian 31-7. Whether the Cougars can generate more scoring than Calvary’s previous opponents is the central matchup question. Merritt Island Christian’s record includes a forfeit win.
For that game at Cougar Field, arrive by 7 p.m.: the school’s GoFan listing gives 7 p.m., while both MaxPreps schedules list 7:15 p.m. The field is at 135 Magnolia Ave. in Merritt Island.
Lake Howell at Melbourne, 7:30 p.m., and Oviedo at Viera, 7 p.m.: two Class 5A, District 5 games put Brevard hosts with 1-1 district records against visitors who are both 2-0. Melbourne and Lake Howell are each 4-2 overall; Viera is 3-3 and Oviedo 4-2. Melbourne’s 42-13 win over Viera last week supplies the immediate local context, but the visitors present different tests.
Lake Howell has scored 52 and 54 points in its two district wins, against East River and Lyman. Melbourne will need to interrupt that production to follow last week’s win with another. Viera faces an Oviedo team whose two defeats were by a combined three points, against Titusville and Lake Mary. If the Hawks can make this a close game, they will be facing an opponent already tested in narrow finishes.
Satellite at Bayside, 7 p.m.: the 7-0 Scorpions have allowed 28 points all season. Bayside, 3-4, arrives after a 38-35 win over Boca Raton Christian. The Bears’ ability to carry that scoring into a game against Satellite is the contrast to watch. Space Coast offers one common-opponent measure: Satellite won 17-7, while Bayside lost 53-7.
