A World War II-era practice bomb was removed from a construction site near Freedom 7 Elementary in Cocoa Beach on Tuesday. The 45th Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Patrick Space Force Base handled the removal after a construction crew found the unexploded ordnance during work near the school. Brevard County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to the site before handing the situation over to military experts. The bomb, identified as an American-made training device, contained no high explosives but had a smoke charge for marking impact locations during air exercises, according to Space Launch Delta 45. The disposal team transported the item to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station for safe disposal. Freedom 7 Elementary is located on the east side of Cocoa Beach, about 2 miles from Patrick Space Force Base. The 45th EOD team regularly works with the sheriff’s office to manage hazardous materials in the area. The bomb was discovered during grading work for a new infrastructure project on the construction site. No injuries or evacuations were reported. The disposal team’s responsibilities include handling unexploded ordnance, chemical weapons, and improvised explosives across the Space Coast. The team is based at Patrick Space Force Base and supports operations at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center. This was the second such discovery in the area this year. The sheriff’s office said the partnership with the military ensures quick response times for potential hazards. The practice bomb was the first of its kind found in the Cocoa Beach area in over a decade. The disposal team used specialized equipment to move the item without disturbing surrounding soil. The site is now clear for continued construction.
