The West Shore Wildcats fell to the Viera Hawks 72-15 in a girls varsity basketball tournament game on January 9 at Viera High School. The loss extends West Shore’s losing streak to seven games, dropping their record to 5-12 on the season. Viera improved to 11-13 with the win.
The game was dominated by Viera from the start, with the Hawks outscoring West Shore 19-3 in the first quarter. West Shore managed to cut the lead to 23-9 at halftime but struggled to keep pace in the second half. Viera scored 32 points in the second quarter alone, extending their lead to 53-13 by the end of the third quarter.
West Shore’s offense struggled throughout the game, managing just 15 points total. The Wildcats shot 12% from the field and turned the ball over 28 times. Viera, meanwhile, shot 58% from the field and forced 22 turnovers. “We didn’t execute any part of our game plan,” West Shore head coach Maria Lopez said after the game. “Viera played harder and faster than we did.”
The loss marks the third straight game West Shore has scored fewer than 20 points. The team is now 0-5 in tournament play this season. Viera, which entered the game ranked 14th in the state in Class 5A, will host a regional playoff game next week. West Shore’s next game is a home contest against Cocoa on January 16.
