Heritage, 2-0 entering the game, has outscored opponents 126-38 through two weeks, while Viera, 1-1, looks to bounce back after a 21-14 loss to Cocoa. The game, set for Friday at Heritage’s campus, is expected to draw a crowd of over 1,000 fans, according to school officials. 'This is a big game for both programs,' said Heritage coach Mark Thompson. 'We know Viera is going to bring their A-game.'
Meanwhile, several other Brevard County teams are heading on the road for challenging matchups. Eau Gallie (1-1) travels to Melbourne to face a 3-0 Melbourne High team, while West Port (1-1) faces Satellite High (2-0) in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Satellite campus. Both games are part of a tough stretch for the Knights and Panthers, who have struggled with injuries this season. 'We’re preparing for the worst,' said West Port coach Lisa Hernandez. 'These teams are hungry, and we need to stay focused.'
The Heritage-Viera game is the only home contest for Heritage this season, adding pressure on the host team. Viera’s offense, led by quarterback Jake Martinez, has averaged 240 yards per game, but the team has struggled defensively, allowing 28 points in its first two games. Heritage’s defense, ranked No. 1 in the region, will look to contain Martinez and limit big plays. 'We’ve studied their film,' said Heritage linebacker Ryan Carter. 'We know what we need to do.'
Other local games include a 7:30 p.m. matchup between Palm Bay and Ridgeview, and a 6 p.m. contest between Titusville and Space Coast.
