The City of Melbourne is testing a new type of manhole as part of a pilot program to modernize its wastewater collection system. The initiative, led by the Public Works Department, aims to address recurring issues with traditional manholes, including leaks and frequent repairs. The new design incorporates advanced materials and a sealed structure to minimize water loss and maintenance needs. Testing began in early 2023 at a site on South Street, near the intersection of Pine and 10th Avenue.
City officials say the manhole is part of a broader effort to upgrade aging infrastructure across Brevard County. The prototype uses a polymer-based composite that resists corrosion and cracking, a common problem with concrete manholes. Engineers have noted that traditional manholes in the area require repairs every three to five years, costing taxpayers an estimated $15,000 per unit annually. The new model, if successful, could cut maintenance costs by up to 40%.
Public Works Director Maria Gonzalez said the pilot program is a response to feedback from utility workers and residents. "We’ve heard concerns about frequent backups and the smell from old manholes," she said. "This design should last longer and reduce the need for emergency repairs." The test site includes sensors to monitor water flow and structural integrity in real time. Data will be collected over the next 18 months to evaluate performance.
The city has not yet announced plans to expand the program, but officials are considering a phased rollout if the results meet expectations. The project is funded through a $2.1 million state grant allocated for infrastructure improvements in 2022. The new manhole is one of several innovations the city is exploring to update its 1950s-era wastewater system. Similar tests are planned for two other locations in the coming months. If the pilot succeeds, the city could replace up to 50 traditional manholes with the new model by 2025.
