The group is part of the Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch, a program that enlists residents to track the ancient species along Florida’s coasts. The effort is critical for scientists studying the crabs’ role in coastal ecosystems and their connection to medical research.
The program began in Brevard County last year after a partnership between the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and local conservation groups. Volunteers collect data on crab populations, noting numbers, sizes, and locations. Each crab is marked with a small, harmless tag before being released. The data helps researchers monitor trends and assess the health of coastal habitats.
Participants say the work is straightforward but meaningful. 'You don’t need a degree to help,' said Maria Lopez, a regular volunteer from Cocoa. 'Just watch where you step. They’re everywhere during high tide.' The crabs, which have existed for over 450 million years, are often found in shallow waters during spring and early summer. Volunteers meet at Kelly Park East twice monthly from March to June, weather permitting.
The crabs’ importance extends beyond conservation. Their blue blood contains a compound used in medical testing for bacterial contamination. Harvesting crabs for this purpose is tightly regulated, but the Florida program focuses on non-invasive monitoring. The initiative has grown rapidly, with over 200 volunteers statewide this year. In Brevard alone, participants have documented more than 1,500 crabs since the program’s launch.
