The Viera High School softball team fell 9-0 to Bloomingdale in a playoff game on May 7 at Bloomingdale's home field in Valrico, Florida. The loss marked the end of Viera's season, which concluded with a 14-12 overall record. Bloomingdale, which finished the regular season with a 19-9 mark, advanced to the next round of the playoffs.
The game, played in front of a modest crowd, saw Bloomingdale dominate from the start. Viera managed only three hits in the contest and failed to score in any inning. Bloomingdale's pitching staff held the Hawks to zero runs, with the Bulls scoring two in the first inning and adding five more in the third. The game ended after seven innings due to the mercy rule.
Viera coach Sarah Mitchell said the team struggled to make contact against Bloomingdale's pitching. 'We knew they had a strong staff, but we hoped to keep it close,' Mitchell said. 'It didn't work out.' Bloomingdale's coach, Mark Thompson, praised his team's execution. 'We came in focused and played the game we needed to win,' he said.
This year's playoff matchup was the first between the two schools in the postseason. Bloomingdale's victory moves them closer to a potential regional title, while Viera's season ends with a loss in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulls will face the winner of the Lake Mary vs. Palm Bay matchup next week.
