A video recorded late Tuesday afternoon shows a large tractor-trailer losing control on Melbourne's Causeway Street, striking three vehicles before coming to rest near the intersection of Causeway and Saturn Avenue. The incident occurred during the afternoon rush hour, according to Melbourne Police Department records. No serious injuries were reported, but traffic backed up for nearly two miles before emergency crews cleared the scene.
The footage, shared widely on local social media, shows the truck veering sharply to the left before slamming into a minivan, a pickup truck, and a delivery van. Witnesses said the driver appeared to swerve to avoid a pedestrian crossing the street. 'It happened so fast,' said one bystander, who declined to give her name. 'The truck didn’t slow down at all.'
Melbourne police confirmed they are investigating whether the driver was impaired or speeding. The truck was registered to a logistics company based in Cocoa, Florida, though officials have not yet identified the driver. A spokesperson for the company said they were cooperating with authorities and would provide any available information.
The collision disrupted traffic for over two hours, with crews from the Florida Highway Patrol and Brevard County Fire Rescue working to remove the damaged vehicles. Local businesses along Causeway Street reported delays in deliveries and customer traffic. 'We’ve had similar incidents before, but nothing this severe,' said Marcus Delgado, owner of a nearby auto shop.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Melbourne Police Department. The investigation is ongoing, with officials urging drivers to avoid distractions while operating commercial vehicles.
