A Brevard County resident’s visit to Wild Florida Airboats & Gator Park turned into a once-in-a-lifetime experience after an unexpected invitation to see venomous snakes. Located about 75 minutes northeast of Brevard County in Kenansville, the park closed on Sundays but stayed open during the week, offering a more relaxed atmosphere for visitors. The trip began as a plan to see new animal residents, but it quickly shifted course when staff invited the visitor inside the facility they call the “Ven house.”
Wild Florida’s drive-through safari and walk-through animal park typically draw crowds, but weekday visits avoid the weekend rush. The park’s owner, who declined to be named, has long emphasized the importance of controlled environments for both animals and guests. The visitor, who works in Brevard County, often takes weekday trips to avoid crowds, finding the slower pace ideal for photography and observation.
The original goal was to see newer residents like the bat-eared fox, but the day took an unexpected turn. The visitor had built relationships with staff over years, leading to the invitation. Inside the “Ven house,” they met two juvenile pit vipers: a Sri Lanka green pit viper and a Guatemalan cantil pit viper. The Sri Lanka green pit viper’s tail mimics a worm, a survival tactic known as caudal luring, which the visitor observed firsthand.
The experience was described as a “core memory” by the visitor, who noted the snakes’ behavior and the keepers’ expertise. The facility, which houses venomous snakes, requires visitors to stay behind barriers for safety. The encounter highlighted the park’s commitment to education, with staff explaining the snakes’ behaviors and habitats.
The visit ended with the visitor reflecting on the unique opportunity. “It’s not every day you get to see venomous snakes up close,” they said.
