U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Anthony Utreras De Souza has been named Space Systems Command’s Safety NCO of the Year, an honor highlighting his role in ensuring safety across Patrick Space Force Base. The award, announced Feb. 25, recognizes his work as the noncommissioned officer in charge of occupational safety for Space Launch Delta 45. De Souza oversees facility inspections and safety programs at the base, which hosts critical military and commercial space operations.
De Souza’s responsibilities include inspecting buildings, monitoring safety protocols, and preventing accidents at the installation. His work spans across the base’s 15,000-acre footprint, which includes launch pads, hangars, and administrative buildings. He has conducted over 200 facility inspections since 2023, according to Space Launch Delta 45 officials. "Make sure everybody gets home safe," De Souza said in an interview. "That’s the mission."
The award is given annually by Space Systems Command to a noncommissioned officer who demonstrates excellence in safety leadership. De Souza’s nomination came after a review by a panel of safety officers from across the command. Col. Rebecca Morgan, the commander of Space Launch Delta 45, called him "a model for how safety should be prioritized in high-risk environments."
De Souza’s work has contributed to a 12% reduction in workplace injuries at Patrick Space Force Base since 2022, according to internal data. He has also implemented new training programs for contractors working on the base. His approach focuses on collaboration rather than enforcement, with regular meetings between safety officers and workers to address concerns. "He listens," said one technician who requested anonymity. "That makes a difference."
