The Florida Department of Transportation activated two new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons on US-192 at West New Haven Avenue and State Road 500 in Melbourne and West Melbourne on February 23, 2026. The Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons use flashing lights to alert drivers when pedestrians are crossing. They are activated by pedestrians pressing a button at the crosswalk, which triggers a sequence of warnings for drivers. FDOT said the beacons will help increase visibility at intersections where traffic signals are not present.
Three additional PHBs are set to be activated along US-192 between I-95 and Babcock Street. The new locations include Pearl Street / Circle Drive, Haven Drive / Campbell Drive, and Wawa Way. The project is part of a larger FDOT effort to upgrade the US-192 corridor.
The upgrades include safer pedestrian crossings, improved traffic signals, and better access management. FDOT has also added bicycle accommodations, such as dedicated lanes and signage, to the plan. The agency said the changes are expected to reduce accidents and improve travel times for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The PHBs on US-192 are the first of several upgrades planned for the corridor this year. FDOT has not released a timeline for the remaining installations but said the work is part of a multiyear safety project. Local officials praised the initiative as a step toward making the road safer for all users.
