Two men are charged with kidnapping and other felony offenses after a woman told Brevard County investigators she was held captive for days in a Titusville home. Dwayne Antwan Mitchell, 42, of Jacksonville, and Adam Carnell Copeland, 41, of Titusville, are accused in the case, which authorities say ended on June 16 when the woman fled through the front door of the residence and asked a neighbor mowing his yard to call police. The woman, identified in court documents only by her initials LN, told officers she had been held against her will for several days at 3195 Daryl Terrace. Property records show the home is owned by Copeland and his wife, Theadora Copeland Bishop.
The incident came to light when the woman ran onto the yard of a neighbor on Daryl Terrace around 11:30 a.m. on June 16. The neighbor, who was mowing his lawn, called police after she asked for help. While waiting for officers, the woman told the neighbor she had just escaped from the home nearby. As police approached 3195 Daryl Terrace, they saw the front door slightly ajar. The door suddenly shut, according to an arrest affidavit from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
Mitchell is charged with five counts, including kidnapping and sexual battery, based on the affidavit. He is described as the primary aggressor during the woman’s captivity. Copeland faces a kidnapping charge for allegedly driving the woman to Lake City with her face covered, authorities said. Both men were booked into the Brevard County Jail, with Copeland arrested on July 6 and Mitchell on June 17. The affidavit, sworn by Special Victims Unit Agent Ashley Jennings, details the woman’s account of being held in the home for days before escaping.
The case is under active investigation by the sheriff’s office. No other residents of the home were immediately identified as victims, though the affidavit notes the woman’s escape through the front door. Authorities have not yet disclosed how the woman managed to flee or what led to the men’s arrest. The home at 3195 Daryl Terrace remains a focus of the probe, with detectives reviewing security footage and interviewing neighbors.
