Times Square Diner, a staple of Melbourne’s food scene since 2019, will shut its doors for good on August 5. The restaurant at 7777 North Wickham Road has operated for seven years, but owners Hernando and Sol Castellon said they can no longer sustain the business. "We explored every option available and fought to keep our doors open, but ultimately we have reached the point where we can no longer continue," the couple wrote in a social media post announcing the closure.
The decision comes after years of rising costs for food, supplies, insurance, utilities, and labor. Combined with economic difficulties that have affected customers, the Castellons said the restaurant could not remain financially viable. "To every customer who chose to dine with us, recommended us to a friend, celebrated a special occasion here, or simply stopped in for a meal, thank you," they wrote. "Your support allowed us to live our dream for these past several years, and for that we will always be grateful."
The diner was known for its diverse menu, offering Greek specialties like souvlaki platters alongside Italian, Spanish, and classic American dishes. It became a local favorite for generous portions served at all meals, as well as its selection of desserts. The restaurant had previously operated a separate location, Time Square Pizza, which closed earlier this year.
The closure marks the end of an era for the Castellons, who had run both the diner and pizza restaurant since 2019. The pair had previously expressed hope that changing menus or adjusting hours might keep the business afloat, but those efforts proved insufficient. "We tried everything," Hernando Castellon said in a recent interview. "But the numbers just don’t add up anymore."
Neighbors and regulars have expressed sadness over the news. Some have already begun planning farewell visits, while others are calling on local leaders to address the challenges facing small businesses. The final day of operation is August 5, after which the building will be vacated.
