The incident occurred during the rocket’s uncontrolled reentry following a 2020 mission to launch a batch of Starlink satellites. SpaceX did not immediately comment on the event, but officials with the Federal Aviation Administration said the debris followed a trajectory that led it to impact the Moon’s far side.

The fragment, estimated to weigh around 250 pounds, broke off during the rocket’s descent after its first stage separated from the payload. While SpaceX typically monitors and recovers its rockets, this particular flight was not tracked due to a software glitch that prevented the company from retrieving telemetry data. The piece traveled over 238,000 miles to reach the Moon, where it struck at a speed of approximately 5,600 mph.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which maps the Moon’s surface, has not yet confirmed the impact site, but scientists say the debris is likely still visible as a small crater. The event has raised questions about the long-term risks of untracked space debris, particularly as companies like SpaceX plan more frequent launches.

SpaceX’s Launch Site 40 in Cape Canaveral, which oversees missions for the company’s Starlink internet constellation, is located about 30 miles from the town of Titusville. Local officials said the incident highlights the need for better tracking systems for orbital debris, though no immediate changes to SpaceX operations are expected.

The impact occurred during a period of heightened interest in lunar exploration, with NASA’s Artemis program preparing for its first crewed Moon mission in 2025.
