SpaceX is building a 380-foot-tall Starship maintenance facility called Gigabay at Kennedy Space Center. The structure, visible from Titusville across the Indian River, will prepare Super Heavy boosters for launches. Construction began in Fall 2025 and is set to finish by August 2026. The facility sits near NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building at SpaceX’s Robert’s Road site.
The Gigabay will stack and assemble the 232-foot-tall Super Heavy boosters used for Starship missions. These include private projects like Starlink satellite deployments and NASA’s Artemis program, which may use Starship as a lunar lander by 2028. SpaceX plans to launch Starship from Florida’s Pad 39A and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Launch Complex 37.
The facility’s construction was first noted in February 2025 through an FAA document. While SpaceX’s next Starship test is in Texas, the company aims to conduct Florida launches this year. Gigabay is shorter than NASA’s 525-foot Vehicle Assembly Building but will be a prominent feature near Cape Canaveral.
Public visibility of the facility is a key aspect. The black-sided structure is already a landmark for locals and visitors. SpaceX’s work on Gigabay aligns with its goal to use Florida as a primary launch site for Starship, which could carry astronauts to the moon under NASA’s Artemis program. The timeline for Gigabay’s completion matches NASA’s projected use of Starship by 2028.
SpaceX has not confirmed specific launch dates for Florida yet, but the facility’s progress indicates readiness. The Gigabay’s role in preparing Super Heavy boosters will support both commercial and government missions. As the structure nears completion, it signals SpaceX’s expanding presence at Kennedy Space Center.
