A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage that launched from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral last year crashed into the moon on Wednesday, as scientists had predicted. The impact occurred after the rocket drifted off course for over a year, according to observations from a telescope in Chile. The European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope detected a debris plume containing sodium and lithium for at least five to 10 minutes after the collision, confirming the crash. SpaceX said the event was not intentional, but a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces pushed the rocket onto a collision path with the moon.
The debris plume, spotted by astronomers using the telescope in Chile, is the first direct evidence of the crash. Scientists had long expected the uncontrolled rocket stage to hit the moon eventually, given its trajectory. This follows a similar incident in 2022 when a Chinese rocket unintentionally struck the moon after a lunar mission. Experts warn that such events could become more common as the U.S. and China accelerate plans for lunar exploration.
Julianna Scheiman, a SpaceX engineer, said the company is working with NASA to prevent future collisions. She emphasized that the crash was an unintended consequence of natural forces, not a failure in spacecraft design. The rocket, which carried two lunar landers in 2025, had no propulsion system to adjust its course after completing its mission. Without active control, it gradually drifted toward the moon.
Carl Schmidt, a researcher at Boston University, confirmed the crash based on the debris plume’s chemical signature. He said the sodium and lithium emissions stretched for miles into space, a clear indicator of a high-speed impact. Schmidt noted that the moon’s surface is becoming a growing repository for space debris, with many past collisions likely going unnoticed. “We’ve only just begun to track these events,” he said in an email.
The incident has reignited debates about space traffic management. With more commercial and government missions targeting the moon, experts are calling for stricter guidelines to prevent uncontrolled objects from becoming hazards. SpaceX and NASA are reviewing data from the crash to improve future mission planning, but no immediate changes to launch protocols have been announced.
