SpaceX has resumed its evening rocket launches at Cape Canaveral after a temporary pause linked to Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The return marks the first time in months that residents of Brevard County can watch Starlink missions depart as the sun sets over the Indian River Lagoon. Launches now occur between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. from the historic Launch Complex 39A. "It’s a welcome change for people who work late shifts or prefer watching launches after dark," said Jason Smith, a resident of Titusville who has attended over 20 launches since 2020. The FAA had earlier restricted evening launches to address concerns about light pollution and wildlife disruption near the Kennedy Space Center. SpaceX engineers adjusted the countdown timeline to align with new guidelines, allowing the Falcon 9 rocket to lift off just as twilight turns to night. The change has drawn crowds to viewing areas along the Space Coast, with local businesses reporting increased sales of snacks and merchandise near the launch site. "We’ve seen a 25% rise in visitors since the schedule shifted," said Maria Gonzalez, owner of a gift shop near the Banana River. SpaceX’s Starlink program has conducted 14 launches this year, with most occurring during daylight hours. The evening launches add a new dimension to the viewing experience, as the rocket’s exhaust plume contrasts against the darkening sky. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has not yet commented on the impact of the revised schedule on local ecosystems.
