SpaceX launched its Starfall demo mission from Launch Complex 39A at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on April 5, 2024. The rocket’s first stage, the Super Heavy booster, landed successfully at the nearby Landing Zone 1, a routine milestone for the reusable system. The mission’s primary objective was to evaluate the spacecraft’s heat shield and guidance systems during reentry. SpaceX has conducted three previous Starship test flights since 2020, but this marks the first launch from Florida since the 2021 SN15 flight. The Starfall mission follows a series of delays caused by a January 2024 explosion during a static fire test at the Boca Chica site in Texas. The Brevard County Economic Development Commission noted the launch as a boost for the local economy, with over 200 jobs tied to SpaceX operations in the area. The next planned Starship test is scheduled for late 2024, pending regulatory approvals. Local residents reported hearing the launch but no significant shaking, with the rocket’s plume visible along the coast. The mission’s success could pave the way for crewed flights later this year.
