The Starfall mission comes as SpaceX enters a growing sector of space-based manufacturing. Similar capsules, like those operated by Varda Space Industries and Atmos Space Cargo, have already carried experiments to orbit. The FAA’s environmental assessment noted that Starfall could support pharmaceutical and materials research currently conducted on the International Space Station, which is expected to be decommissioned in the coming years.

SpaceX plans to use Starfall for rapid cargo transport between points on Earth, though details remain sparse. The capsules will provide access to microgravity and vacuum conditions, which are critical for certain scientific and industrial processes. The FAA document did not specify the payload or mission duration for this first test flight.

The Falcon 9’s first-stage booster landed successfully at Cape Canaveral’s Landing Zone 1 shortly after liftoff. This was the second flight of the booster, which previously launched a classified National Reconnaissance Office mission in March. SpaceX did not release public updates about the Starfall mission prior to launch, keeping details about its purpose and experiments under wraps.

The launch follows months of regulatory review. The FAA’s May environmental assessment outlined the capsule’s design and mission parameters, but SpaceX has not publicly disclosed the project’s goals. The Starfall capsule is expected to return to Earth later this week, parachuting into the Pacific Ocean for recovery.
