Early Wednesday morning, residents of Virginia Beach and surrounding areas saw a bright, cone-shaped plume in the sky shortly after 6 a.m. The phenomenon was caused by sunlight reflecting off the exhaust of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The rocket lifted off at 5:52 a.m. Eastern Time, carrying 29 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. The glowing trail was visible hundreds of miles away due to the timing of the launch near sunrise.
The Falcon 9 launched from Space Launch Complex-40, marking the 25th flight of the rocket’s first-stage booster. This booster has previously supported missions such as Ax-2, Euclid, Ax-3, CRS-30, SES ASTRA 1P, and NG-21, along with multiple Starlink launches. After stage separation, the reusable booster landed successfully on the droneship “A Shortfall of Gravitas” in the Atlantic Ocean.
According to NASA, rocket launches near sunrise or sunset can produce glowing plumes visible over long distances. Even when the ground is dark, rockets at high altitudes can remain in direct sunlight, causing exhaust gases to scatter light and form bright clouds or halos. This explains why the plume was visible in Virginia despite the early hour.
Residents across Hampton Roads reported seeing the unusual display, describing a bright streak followed by a halo-like expansion. The event highlights how rocket launches can create unexpected visual effects in the atmosphere, even when the mission itself goes off without incident. SpaceX did not issue any specific statements about the visibility of the plume, but the occurrence is not uncommon during launches at certain times of day.
