A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, carrying 29 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. The late-night launch window offers a unique opportunity for residents across Florida to witness the rocket’s ascent and a potential 'space jellyfish' effect in the sky. The phenomenon, characterized by bubble-like shapes or contrails illuminated by sunlight, has been spotted as far north as Jacksonville and as far south as West Palm Beach in past launches.

The launch will take place from the same site used for NASA’s Apollo missions, located about 40 miles south of Kennedy Space Center. Visibility depends on weather conditions and cloud cover, but previous sightings suggest the effect could be visible in Collier County, Leon County, and other parts of the state. On July 9, residents in Tallahassee, St. Augustine, and Naples reported seeing the glowing contrail after a 5:21 a.m. launch.

SpaceX has not confirmed whether the July 14 launch will produce the same effect, but the timing—occurring during the transition between night and sunrise—creates ideal conditions. The rocket’s exhaust plume may reflect sunlight, creating the jellyfish-like shapes that linger for minutes after liftoff.

Residents are advised to check the launch schedule and weather forecasts before heading to viewing spots along the Space Coast. The Falcon 9’s first stage will land at Cape Canaveral’s Landing Zone 1, while the satellites will deploy into orbit approximately 30 minutes after liftoff. This mission marks the 10th Starlink launch of 2026 from Florida, continuing SpaceX’s efforts to expand global broadband coverage.
