SpaceX has announced plans to increase launch frequency at its Cape Canaveral Space Launch Site in 2024, citing growing demand for satellite deployments and crewed missions. The company, which employs over 2,500 people in the region, is working with local officials to streamline permitting processes for up to 12 launches this year. "We’re seeing a clear uptick in mission readiness," said a SpaceX spokesperson in a May 15 meeting with Brevard County commissioners. "Our teams here are essential to meeting global space goals."
The company’s Starlink satellite internet project has already brought 500 new jobs to the area since 2022, according to data from the Brevard Economic Development Corporation. These positions span engineering, logistics, and technical support roles. SpaceX also recently partnered with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to expand aerospace training programs, with the first cohort of students set to graduate in 2025.
SpaceX’s Starship prototype, currently under testing at the company’s South Texas facility, has not yet been deployed to Florida. However, officials say the company is evaluating potential modifications to its Florida-based infrastructure to support future heavy-lift missions. Local contractors have reported increased subcontracting opportunities, with firms like T. rex Construction securing $18 million in contracts for site upgrades in 2023.
Residents near the launch site have mixed reactions. Maria Gonzalez, a lifelong resident of Cocoa, said, "It’s exciting to see the economy grow, but the noise from launches can be disruptive." Meanwhile, business owners in nearby Titusville report steady increases in customer traffic. "We’ve seen a 20% rise in visitors since the Starlink expansion," said John Carter, owner of Titusville’s Space Coast Brewing Company.
The Florida Space Coast Office of Economic Development is pushing for additional infrastructure investments, including a proposed $50 million expansion of the Port Canaveral cargo terminal to handle increased satellite component shipments. SpaceX has not commented on the proposal but has expressed interest in collaborating with local governments on long-term planning.
