SpaceX conducted its final Falcon 9 Starlink launch from Florida on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The mission marked the end of a seven-year streak of dedicated Starlink launches from the East Coast, as the company shifts focus to its Starship rocket for future satellite deployments. SpaceX Vice President of Launch Kiko Dontchev confirmed the change after the launch, stating it was the last planned Falcon 9 Starlink mission from Florida.
The announcement came as a surprise to many on the Space Coast, with no prior public disclosure about the shift. Dontchev highlighted the achievement of the Falcon 9 team, noting the rocket’s role in launching 260 Starlink missions from the Cape since 2017. He praised the vehicle’s reliability and its contribution to building the largest low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, which provides internet connectivity to millions globally.
While Falcon 9 Starlink missions are ending from Florida, the rocket will continue to operate from the Space Coast for other purposes. SpaceX will use Falcon 9 for commercial, NASA, and national security missions, as well as Falcon Heavy launches. However, the reduction in Starlink-specific launches is expected to slow the pace of rocket launches on the Space Coast in the near term.
The transition to Starship for Starlink missions aligns with SpaceX’s long-term goals. The West Coast team at Vandenberg Space Force Base will continue regular Starlink launches from California. Dontchev expressed confidence in Starship’s potential, calling it the next step in expanding global broadband coverage. The move reflects SpaceX’s broader strategy to scale up Starlink’s capabilities while phasing out older launch systems.
Local observers noted the change could impact the Space Coast’s economy and workforce, which has relied heavily on the consistent cadence of Falcon 9 launches. However, SpaceX emphasized that Florida remains a key hub for its operations, with ongoing missions expected to sustain the region’s role in the space industry.
