SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft docked with the International Space Station shortly after 6:30 a.m. May 17, completing a 36-hour journey from Florida. The docking marked the start of NASA’s 34th Commercial Resupply Services mission, with the spacecraft expected to remain at the ISS until mid-June. The mission carried 6,500 pounds of cargo, including experiments on bone health and red blood cell changes in microgravity. One experiment involves a bone scaffold that could lead to new treatments for osteoporosis, while another aims to study how red blood cells behave in space.

The Falcon 9 rocket launched the Dragon from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Friday evening. The first-stage booster used for the mission has previously supported five other launches, including the KF-01 mission, IMAP, NROL-77, GPS III-9, and a Starlink mission. After stage separation, the booster landed at Landing Zone 40 at the same space force station, continuing SpaceX’s practice of reusing hardware to reduce costs.

The Dragon’s arrival follows a routine timeline for resupply missions. The spacecraft will remain attached to the ISS for several weeks before returning to Earth with used equipment and scientific data. NASA officials said the experiments on board could advance understanding of long-term human spaceflight and its effects on the body. The mission also includes supplies for the crew living aboard the ISS, which currently hosts astronauts from multiple countries.

This is the second resupply mission to the ISS in 2026, with SpaceX continuing its role as a key contractor for NASA’s human spaceflight program. The company’s ability to reuse rocket components has made its launches more cost-effective compared to earlier missions. The Dragon’s successful docking comes as the ISS prepares for a series of planned upgrades and experiments in the coming months.
