The City of Melbourne will honor local veterans participating in the Space Coast Honor Flight program with a public celebration on Sept. 6 at Melbourne Regional Airport. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the airport’s terminal building. Organizers say the day will include guest speakers, a display of military memorabilia, and opportunities for veterans to share their stories.
The Honor Flight program typically transports veterans to Washington D.C. to visit memorials honoring their service. The Space Coast chapter has organized multiple trips since 2019, with over 400 veterans completing the journey. This event marks the first public recognition for veterans who recently returned from a July trip to the nation’s capital. City officials emphasized the importance of the program in giving veterans a chance to reflect on their service.
Melbourne Mayor Buddy Dyer said the city has supported the Honor Flight chapter for years. ‘This is a way to thank these men and women for their sacrifice,’ Dyer said during a recent city council meeting. ‘Our community owes them a debt of gratitude.’ The event will feature a luncheon provided by local businesses, including Brevard County-based restaurant chains and veteran-owned enterprises.
The celebration will also include a military color guard, a performance by the Brevard County School Board’s honor guard, and a display of flags from each branch of the U.S. military. Families of veterans are encouraged to attend, and organizers have set up a photo booth for attendees to take pictures with historic military equipment. The event is part of a broader effort by local leaders to increase visibility for veterans’ programs across Brevard County.
