Brevard County schools are gearing up for the SSAA state championship, with local teams determined to reclaim the title after a multi-year absence. The last Space Coast team to win the title was in 2019, when Satellite High School’s football squad defeated Lakeland in the final. Now, coaches and athletes are working to repeat that success.
The Southeastern Sports Association of America (SSAA) includes 22 schools across central Florida, and Brevard teams have struggled to compete in recent years. This season, however, several programs are showing promise. At Cocoa High School, the track and field team has already set five school records, while the girls’ volleyball squad advanced to the regional semifinals.
Junior sprinter Marcus Johnson, a standout at Westside High, said the team’s focus is on consistency. “We’ve been training harder this year,” he said. “Our coaches say if we stay disciplined, we can make it to the state final.” Johnson’s coach, Elena Martinez, confirmed the team’s approach. “We’re not just chasing a trophy,” she said. “We’re building a culture that lasts beyond one season.”
Community support has also grown. Local businesses have donated equipment to multiple schools, and parent volunteers are helping with travel logistics. The Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a free skills clinic on March 22, open to all SSAA participants.
The state championship is scheduled for April 5 at the Brevard County Fairgrounds. With three Space Coast teams in the running, local fans are optimistic but cautious. “We’ve got talent,” said Martinez. “Now we just need to execute when it matters.”
