The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will perform “Lights Up on Broadway” at 7 p.m. on July 18 at the Scott Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne. The concert marks the orchestra’s 18th season and includes a world premiere by composer Julian Bond. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door, with free admission for those under 18 or with a college ID. The event will feature music from Broadway blockbusters like “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” and “Grease.”
The concert opens with Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” an orchestral piece that inspired the 1951 film of the same name. The program spans several eras of theater music, with selections from “South Pacific,” “Evita,” and “Grease.” At the heart of the performance is the world premiere of “Rhapsody for a Blue Clarinet, by George!” by Julian Bond. The piece, inspired by Gershwin’s style, will be performed by principal clarinetist Jennifer Royals. The work is described as playful and charming, with a blend of classical and theatrical elements.
Jordan Bicasan, a longtime SCSO violinist, will make his vocal debut with two American standards: “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” Bicasan’s performance adds a new dimension to the evening, showcasing the orchestra’s versatility. Conductor and artistic director Aaron Collins said the concert highlights the enduring appeal of Broadway music. “Each generation finds new life inside it,” he said. “The standards endure because they leave space for personality.”
The Space Coast Symphony, one of the few U.S. orchestras to perform year-round, has found that Broadway repertoire draws audiences during the summer.
