Charles 'Phil' Smith, a Cocoa High School graduate and triple-trifecta athlete, became Eastern Florida State's first scholarship athlete in the 1960s. Smith, who was inducted into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame in 2016, earned nine varsity letters across football, basketball, and track during his high school career. He graduated from Cocoa High School in 1961 after being named All-State in both football and basketball.
Smith's athletic journey reflects a different era in sports. 'Athletes back then didn’t specialize,' he said. 'We played football and then two weeks later went to basketball, and when that was over, we headed to track.' That approach earned him three letters in each sport, a feat uncommon today. His versatility caught the attention of Eastern Florida State, where he became the first scholarship athlete in the school's history.
Smith's contributions to sports extended beyond his playing days. He received the FCCAA Distinguished Service Award for his work in the community and remained active in promoting youth athletics. Despite his accomplishments, Smith remained humble. 'I was just a kid trying to play every sport I could,' he said during a recent interview.
The Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame recognized Smith's legacy in 2016, highlighting his role as a pioneer for multi-sport athletes. His story continues to inspire local students, though he acknowledges the shift in modern sports. 'Today’s kids focus on one sport, which is great for specialization,' he said. 'But I always believed in the value of playing multiple sports.'
Smith, now in his 80s, still lives in Brevard County and occasionally visits Cocoa High School to talk to students. He emphasizes the importance of hard work and adaptability, lessons he learned through competing in three sports. 'It taught me how to handle pressure and stay focused,' he said. 'Those skills helped me in life, not just on the field.'
