Space Coast's varsity softball team fell to Cocoa Beach 8-1 in a playoff game on April 14 at a neutral site. The loss drops the Vipers to 12-7 overall, while the Minutemen improve to 23-7. The game was part of the state tournament bracket, with both teams vying for advancement. Cocoa Beach struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs before Space Coast managed its only run in the fifth. The Minutemen added five more runs in the third to secure control early. "We didn't execute when we needed to," said Space Coast head coach Maria Hernandez. "Cocoa Beach played smarter and more consistently." The Vipers committed two errors in the game, which contributed to the Minutemen's offensive opportunities. Space Coast's pitcher, sophomore Emily Carter, allowed eight earned runs on seven hits over five innings. Cocoa Beach's pitcher, junior Sarah Mitchell, struck out six batters and limited Space Coast to just six hits. The game marked the first playoff appearance for several Space Coast seniors, who will graduate this spring. The Vipers will face a reseeded team in the next round, with the outcome of this game affecting their seeding. Cocoa Beach, which has won 11 straight games, will advance to the regional semifinals. The next game for the Minutemen is scheduled for April 18 against Satellite High School. The Space Coast team will regroup ahead of its next matchup, which is currently pending.
