A professional soccer team and 8,000-seat stadium are in the works for a 54-acre site near Melbourne Orlando International Airport, with organizers aiming for a March 2028 opening. The proposal, led by key figures from Orlando City SC, includes a stadium complex that could host concerts, college games, and other events. Tommy Bonner, a principal with the Space Coast Pro Soccer group, said the project is designed to last beyond the initial team's tenure. "This is going to be around for a lot longer than us. We are just the guardians of this," Bonner said during a June 10 submission of site plan approval paperwork to Melbourne City Hall. The stadium would sit on undeveloped airport-owned land off NASA Boulevard, formerly planned for a resort project called Lakoona Beach that never materialized. The site is bordered by Broadband Drive, Woody Burke Drive, Hibiscus Boulevard, and lies east of the airport. The proposal is still in early stages, with the Melbourne City Council set to vote on conditional-use permits and site plan approvals. According to a five-page business plan filed with the city, the stadium could host up to 27 USL regular-season and playoff matches annually, along with U.S. Open Cup games and preseason friendlies. Other potential uses include high school and college matches, though details on concert capacity or other events remain unspecified. The project's timeline hinges on securing approvals and completing construction by 2028, with organizers emphasizing the site's strategic location near the airport and existing infrastructure. No specific funding sources or construction timelines were disclosed in the initial filings.
