But 2026 has seen a noticeable slowdown so far, with 50 launches recorded through August 10. That number pales next to 2025's pace, though it's more than triple the 31 launches that occurred across all of 2021. The Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station remain the primary hubs for the nation's commercial and government space efforts.
NASA's Artemis II lunar mission in April 2026 marked a high point for the year, but activity has since waned. Only six launches occurred each in May, June and July, a sharp decline from the frenetic pace of 2025. Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket suffered a major setback in May when it exploded during a hot-fire test at Launch Complex 36, derailing the company's schedule and removing its launches from the Eastern Range manifest.
SpaceX remains the dominant player in Florida's launch calendar. The company is targeting two launches in August: one to deploy Starlink satellites and another to send instruments for NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Both missions would use Falcon 9 rockets from Cape Canaveral. A previously scheduled SpaceX launch on August 10 was scrubbed, though no new date has been announced.
The Space Coast's 2025 record was fueled by a combination of NASA missions, commercial launches and international partnerships. But 2026 has faced challenges, including Blue Origin's technical issues and the natural limits of launch infrastructure. Officials at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station say they're working to increase capacity, but the pace of 2025 may be difficult to match.
Despite the slowdown, Florida remains the busiest launch site in the United States. The state's 50 launches through August already exceed the total for 2021, which was a record at the time. With SpaceX's upcoming missions and potential resumption of Blue Origin operations, activity could pick up later in the year.
