The City of Melbourne is set to honor local veterans on October 11 at Melbourne's Minor League Baseball stadium. The event, organized by the Space Coast Honor Flight group, will include a formal ceremony and community celebration for veterans who have traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials. The gathering will take place at the stadium’s main field, which has hosted similar events in the past. Local officials confirmed the date and location during a recent council meeting, emphasizing the importance of recognizing veterans' sacrifices.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with a parade of veterans entering the field, followed by remarks from city leaders and a presentation of certificates to participants. The event will also feature a display of military memorabilia and food trucks from local vendors. The Space Coast Honor Flight group, which has transported over 1,200 veterans to the nation’s capital since 2015, said the event will allow the community to express gratitude directly to those who served. 'This is about making sure they feel appreciated,' said group coordinator Maria Gonzalez during a recent interview.
The stadium, located at 1550 E. New Haven Ave., has become a regular venue for military-related events. Previous gatherings included commemorations for veterans of the Korean War and World War II. The October 11 event will be the first major recognition for Space Coast Honor Flight veterans since the group’s last trip to D.C. in March 2023. Officials said the event will also include a children’s activity area and a live performance by a local band.
Residents are encouraged to attend and participate in the celebration. Parking will be available in the stadium lot and nearby streets, with shuttle buses running from key locations in downtown Melbourne. The event is free and open to the public, though attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets. City leaders said the goal is to create a welcoming environment where veterans and their families can share stories and connect with the community.
