More than 90 firefighters from 12 agencies across Brevard County gathered at Sandpoint Park in Titusville last week for hands-on flood-rescue training. The drills came after a record-breaking storm in October 2025 left drivers stranded and residents trapped in floodwaters. Titusville Fire Department Battalion Chief Greg Sutton said the area received 20 inches of rain in one afternoon, breaking a 1924 rainfall record. "We were hit very hard with a lot of rain in a very short period of time," Sutton said. Emergency crews rescued several people from submerged vehicles during the event. Firefighters practiced techniques like safely entering fast-moving water, using rescue ropes, and stabilizing victims. "Control the victim in the water, they float and they'll bring them over," said Cocoa Beach Fire Training Chief Scott Prevost. The training focused on survival maneuvers and teamwork. Agencies included Titusville, Cocoa Beach, and Palm Bay. The session aimed to prepare first responders for future extreme weather events. "What we're teaching are survival skills," Prevost added. "It's about keeping everyone safe."
