Sickles High School's varsity baseball team defeated Viera 4-2 in a playoff game on May 24 at a neutral site, marking their 30th win of the season. The Gryphons, who entered the game with a 30-2 record, held off the 24-6 Hawks to advance in the postseason. The game, played in Brevard County, was part of the Florida High School Baseball playoffs.
Sickles scored first in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on two walks and a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. Viera responded in the bottom of the second with two runs, but Sickles answered in the third with a two-run double by junior outfielder Jake Martinez. The Gryphons maintained their advantage through the final innings, despite Viera's efforts to rally.
Sickles out-hit Viera 7-4 in the game, with senior pitcher Ethan Cole allowing just two earned runs over seven innings. Cole struck out six batters and limited Viera to four hits. The Hawks' offense was led by senior shortstop Luis Ramirez, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The win improves Sickles' playoff chances as they continue their pursuit of a state title. Viera, which fell to 24-7 with the loss, will face another opponent in the next round of the playoffs. The game's final score was confirmed by B. Doty, a Florida high school baseball official.
