Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is hosting its first ‘Food for Thought’ tour on August 26 at its Brevard County distribution center in Melbourne. The event will give attendees a look at how food is collected, sorted and distributed to those in need. The tour is free but requires registration through FeedHopeNow.org/BrevardTour.
The 6:00 p.m. event will take place at 3125 Skyway Circle, a facility that serves thousands of meals monthly across Brevard County. Visitors will see operations firsthand and hear from staff about the food bank’s partnerships with local businesses and schools. The tour also highlights the role of volunteers and donors in keeping the operation running.
Rachel Roffman, Second Harvest’s Brevard director, said the goal is to demystify how food insecurity affects the community. ‘People often don’t realize how much food is wasted or how many families rely on our services,’ she said in an email. The food bank serves over 150,000 meals annually in Brevard, with demand rising during the pandemic.
The tour is part of a broader effort to increase awareness and donations. Second Harvest reported a 20% increase in food donations last year but still struggles to meet demand. The event will include a Q&A with staff and a chance to tour the warehouse, which processes over 200,000 pounds of food monthly.
