A section of the roof at the Melbourne Community Center collapsed early Tuesday after days of heavy rain, according to Brevard County officials. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. near the building’s east entrance, which is used for youth programs and senior events. No injuries were reported, but the damage has left the facility partially unusable.
County emergency management officials said the collapse was likely caused by saturated soil and prolonged rainfall, which weakened the structure’s support beams. The building, which opened in 2015, has not had major repairs since its construction. A contractor hired by the county is now inspecting the site to determine the full extent of the damage.
The community center serves over 500 residents weekly, offering everything from fitness classes to job training. With the roof compromised, staff have moved operations to a temporary location at the nearby Melbourne Civic Center. County Administrator Steve Capps said repairs could take several months, depending on the findings of the inspection.
Local leaders are calling for increased funding for infrastructure maintenance. Councilwoman Lisa Smith noted that similar issues have been reported at other county facilities in recent years. 'This isn’t an isolated incident,' she said. 'We need to address these problems before they become emergencies.'
The National Weather Service recorded 5.2 inches of rain in Melbourne over the past week, far above the monthly average. Officials are urging residents to report any structural concerns at public buildings. A full investigation into the collapse is ongoing.
