Brevard County health inspectors identified rodent infestations and improper temperature control as recurring problems during recent restaurant inspections. The findings, part of routine checks conducted by the Brevard County Department of Health, highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining food safety standards across the Space Coast. Inspections in March 2024 alone uncovered 12 violations related to rodent activity and 15 temperature-related issues at 18 establishments. "These are preventable problems," said a department spokesperson, who requested anonymity. "Proper pest control and equipment maintenance could resolve most of these issues." Several restaurants in the Melbourne area, including a popular family-owned pizzeria and a chain seafood grill, received critical violations for rodent droppings found near food storage areas. Temperature failures were most common at small, independently owned eateries, where refrigeration units were found to be malfunctioning or improperly calibrated. One taco shop on South Patrick Street had to close temporarily after inspectors discovered a rat nest behind the kitchen counter. The department has issued 23 warning letters and three cease-and-desist orders since January, targeting establishments with repeated violations. Restaurants with multiple infractions face fines ranging from $250 to $1,000 per violation. Local business owners argue that rising costs of pest control services and aging infrastructure in older buildings make compliance difficult. "We’re doing our best," said Maria Lopez, owner of a downtown café cited for temperature issues. "But the equipment is outdated, and the fines are crippling." Health officials emphasize that violations are often linked to deferred maintenance. A 2023 audit found that 40% of inspected restaurants had not updated their pest control plans in over two years.
