Hattaway, who also serves as the district’s 2025–2026 Employee of the Year, will represent Florida’s school-related workforce at the state level.
The Florida Department of Education selected Hattaway for his work as a school resource officer, a role that combines law enforcement duties with student support. He has been at Rockledge High School since 2018 and is credited with reducing school-related incidents by 30% over the past three years, according to Brevard Public Schools records. His efforts include mentorship programs, drug prevention initiatives, and collaboration with teachers to address student mental health.
Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Karen Thompson called Hattaway’s selection a ‘testament to his dedication.’ She noted that his work has improved safety and trust between law enforcement and students in the district. Hattaway’s nomination included testimonials from students, parents, and colleagues highlighting his approachability and commitment to de-escalation.
The award ceremony was held in Tallahassee, where Hattaway received a certificate, a state flag, and a $5,000 prize. He plans to use the funds to expand a community outreach program he started in 2024, which connects students with local mental health services. Hattaway’s colleagues say his focus on building relationships rather than enforcing rules has made him a standout figure in Brevard’s schools.
