A portion of State Road 520 near the intersection of Palm Bay Boulevard collapsed early Tuesday morning, leaving residents of the nearby Sunnyside Senior Living Community without road access. The 50-foot gap in the pavement forced emergency crews to establish a temporary detour using county-owned equipment. "We’re working to get people back on their feet," said Brevard County Public Works Director Maria Lopez during a morning press briefing. "But this is a serious infrastructure failure." The collapse occurred around 3:45 a.m. during a routine inspection of the road, which has been flagged for maintenance issues since 2021. Engineers are now on-site assessing the damage to determine repair timelines. Residents of the senior community, many of whom rely on the road for medical appointments and grocery runs, are being transported by bus to a nearby Walmart parking lot. "I had to cancel my doctor’s appointment today," said resident Eleanor Hart, 78. "This road is all we have." The Florida Department of Transportation confirmed the collapse was not related to recent heavy rainfall but attributed to long-term erosion beneath the pavement. Crews from the state and county are coordinating to stabilize the area and begin repairs. Meanwhile, local officials are urging residents to avoid the area as hazardous materials from the collapsed road are being removed.
