The property, located on Atlantic Avenue near the Indialantic beachfront, has been a source of frustration for residents for nearly a decade. FOX 35 first reported on the home in November 2023 after neighbors described mountains of trash, human waste, and rotting debris piled inside. Brevard County officials eventually secured a condemnation order, forcing the human occupants to leave. But the problems didn’t stop there. Residents now say the vacant structure has become a haven for rats, with some estimating hundreds or even thousands of the pests moving into the surrounding neighborhood.
Local officials have scheduled a public hearing later this month to discuss the property’s future, but residents are growing impatient. The infestation has already begun affecting nearby homes, with security cameras capturing rats scurrying through yards and streets. One neighbor, who lives just two houses away, said the stench from the abandoned home has returned in full force, compounded by the new rodent problem. "It’s like a nightmare that never ends," they said. "We’ve been waiting years for action, and now it’s getting worse."
Brevard County spokesperson Maria Lopez confirmed that the county is working with pest control experts to assess the situation.
