A rare natural phenomenon is currently lighting up the lagoons near Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, about 40 minutes from Orlando. Guides report that comb jellies and early-season dinoflagellates are glowing at the same time, creating a double bioluminescence effect that has drawn visitors and scientists alike. Alfredo Rodríguez of BK Adventure described the experience as 'paddling through a sky full of stars' during a recent tour.
The event, which occurs when two types of bioluminescent organisms appear together, is extremely uncommon. Comb jellies are currently glowing at maximum intensity—5 out of 5—producing vivid rainbow flashes when disturbed. At the same time, dinoflagellates are emitting a lower but noticeable glow, rated between 2 and 3 out of 5, with electric blue flashes visible in the water. Both organisms produce light through chemical reactions triggered by movement, such as paddles or waves.
BK Adventure guides have named the overlap a 'double bioluminescence glow,' a term they say has become a new highlight for their tours. The lagoons surrounding Merritt Island are part of the Indian River Lagoon, a critical ecosystem known for its biodiversity. Scientists note that the lagoon's unique conditions—low light pollution, warm waters, and nutrient-rich environment—make it one of the best places globally to observe bioluminescence.
The phenomenon is expected to last through early April, depending on water temperatures and plankton activity. Local experts are encouraging visitors to check real-time glow levels before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly. 'This is a chance to see something most people never experience,' said one guide, who declined to be named. 'It’s happening right now, and it’s worth seeing.'
