A pilot died Monday after a small plane crashed near Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville. The single-engine aircraft struck a power line and crashed around 10:16 a.m. on Columbia Boulevard, just short of the airport property. Emergency crews found the plane on State Road 405 and extinguished the fire with help from the airport’s crash team. The sole occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. Titusville Police Department detectives are investigating and will release the pilot’s name after positive identification and notifying next of kin. The crash site is near the 6600 block of Tico Road, according to initial reports. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident. Multiple agencies including Brevard County Fire Rescue and Florida Power & Light responded to the crash. Columbia Boulevard remains closed while investigators work and a company from Jacksonville removes the wreckage. Florida Power & Light said repairs to the damaged power lines could take several hours. A press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Titusville Police Department. Detectives have not yet identified the pilot due to the crash’s severity. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and Medical Examiner’s Office are also assisting with the investigation. The plane’s wreckage is blocking traffic on Columbia Boulevard, which will stay closed until the aircraft is removed. Officials said the crash occurred near the airport but not on its property. The Florida Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection are helping with the cleanup. The pilot’s identity will be confirmed after forensic analysis and family notification.
