The City of Palm Bay has secured $3.5 million from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund to build wastewater infrastructure for a new business park called Phoenix Business Park. The project will be located in the northeast corner of the Compound, near J.A. Bombardier Boulevard. City officials say the infrastructure could eventually support 960,000 square feet of industrial and commercial space, with a focus on advanced manufacturing and aerospace industries. The city has committed $1 million in matching funds for the project. The Compound, a 2,700-acre area south of the Space Coast, has largely remained vacant since the 1980s. Mayor Rob Medina said the development will not address the illegal activity and unauthorized recreation that have occurred on the site in recent years but hopes the investment will steer the property toward a different future. The state funding comes as part of a broader effort to boost economic growth in Brevard County. The Phoenix Business Park is expected to create jobs and attract businesses to the area. City officials have not yet announced a timeline for construction or specific companies that might locate there. The Compound has been a source of concern for local law enforcement due to its history of drug use and trespassing. Medina said the city will work with state and local agencies to ensure the new development is secure. The project is part of a larger plan to repurpose underutilized land in Palm Bay. The city has also been exploring other uses for parts of the Compound, including potential residential and commercial developments. No details about those plans have been released yet.
