A temporary fire station has opened in South Palm Bay at the intersection of Babcock Street SE and Mara Loma Boulevard SE, directly across from Sunrise Elementary School. The mobile unit, known as Temporary Station 9, is part of a citywide effort to keep up with emergency response demands as the area’s population surges. The station serves a region where thousands of new homes are expected to be built in the coming years, straining existing public safety resources.
The mobile firehouse consists of specialized modular trailers rather than a permanent building. Assistant Chief John Ringleb said the temporary setup is needed because constructing a traditional fire station can take several years. 'The idea is we can get something temporary in here so we can reach them quicker,' Ringleb said, referring to residents in areas like those off St. John’s Heritage Parkway and Babcock Street.
The station is one of several temporary solutions the Palm Bay Fire Department is using to adapt to the region’s growth. City officials estimate the population in South Palm Bay could increase by 20,000 residents over the next decade, driven by new housing developments and infrastructure projects. The mobile unit will remain in place until a permanent station can be built, which officials say is still in the planning stages.
Residents and local leaders have expressed support for the temporary measure, though some have raised concerns about long-term preparedness. 'This is a necessary step,' said one neighbor, who lives near the new station. 'But it’s clear we need more resources as the area keeps growing.' The fire department says it is working with city planners to ensure emergency services keep pace with development.
