The Palm Bay Aquatic Center hosted the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on Thursday, June 25, 2026, with support from the Palm Bay Recreation Department, Fire Department, Health First Flight, and other local agencies. The event aimed to promote water safety through hands-on training and demonstrations. Over 200 participants, including families and first responders, gathered at the center for the day-long activity.
Swim lessons were conducted by certified lifeguards, while Health First Flight provided medical oversight. A key highlight was a drowning rescue demonstration led by lifeguard Joshua Blow, who performed CPR on a volunteer, Makaylah Fernly, before paramedics from Health First Flight transported her to a waiting ambulance. The simulation emphasized the importance of immediate response in emergencies.
The Fire Department set up a station to teach bystanders how to use automated external defibrillators (AEDs), a skill Blow said could save lives within minutes of a cardiac arrest. 'This isn’t just about swimming,' he said. 'It’s about being prepared for any water-related crisis.'
The event marked the first time Palm Bay has participated in the global initiative, which has drawn thousands of participants in over 30 countries. Local officials said the collaboration between agencies showcased the community’s commitment to safety. 'We’re building a culture where everyone knows how to act in an emergency,' said Recreation Director Maria Lopez. 'This isn’t just a lesson—it’s a lifeline.'
