Palm Bay Fire Rescue is sending personnel to Clay County to assist in fighting the Railroad Fire, a 4,000-acre blaze that began on Sunday. The fire now threatens the Clay-Putnam County line, where crews from Palm Bay, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties are forming a strike team. Assistant Fire Chief John Ringleb said the team will work 10- to 12-hour shifts for up to ten days, depending on conditions. 'We formulate these strike teams based on the needs that are happening wherever the emergency is,' Ringleb said. The fire's location presents challenges. 'It’s extremely rural but then you have these homes and properties that are just dropped in the middle of these acreages of woods and vegetation,' Ringleb explained. 'Those are the people we want to show up for.' The strike team will receive daily assignments from command staff to determine where help is needed. This deployment comes after Palm Bay crews extinguished two major fires in the past four days. Ringleb urged residents to burn responsibly and report any suspicious activity. 'Enjoy yourselves but do it safely,' he said. 'If you see something, call it in. Don’t assume someone else has called it in.' If evacuations are needed, the strike team will also assist residents. The Railroad Fire has no immediate containment, and crews are focused on protecting structures in the area.
