A collapsed roadway in Palm Bay Estates has left more than 100 seniors stranded in their homes, sparking demands for a permanent repair and a city emergency meeting. The road, which serves the 55-plus community, gave way after heavy rain last week, creating a sinkhole visible in video footage shared by residents. David Perrault, who has lived in the neighborhood for eight years, said the collapse was preventable and called for a solution that would last decades. "I want to see the road get fixed so that it’ll last 30, 40, 50 years," Perrault said. "We’ve been sounding the alarm about this for months." The city has acknowledged the drainage pipe beneath the road is public property but maintains the road itself is privately owned. City leaders are holding a special meeting Tuesday to discuss the repair costs and responsibilities. "We don’t have the funds to handle a project like this," said the president of the community’s board of directors. "Obviously, we have a very low budget that we work with." The dispute centers on who should pay for the repairs. While the road is privately maintained, the city owns the drainage system that failed, according to city officials. Residents argue the city should cover the costs, citing the pipe’s ownership and the community’s limited financial resources. The temporary fix installed by contractors has not resolved the issue, and residents are urging a long-term solution. "We’re a retirement community," the board president said. "We’re not asking for anything more than when any other retirement community would ask if there’s such an issue." The city has not yet responded to requests for comment ahead of the meeting. With no permanent repair in sight, residents remain concerned about the safety of the road and their ability to leave their homes. The emergency meeting is set for Tuesday, but no timeline for repairs has been announced.
