The Palm Bay Aquatic Center hosted a segment of the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on June 25, partnering with the Palm Bay Recreation Department, Fire Department, Health First First Flight, and other local agencies. The event took place at the aquatic center, drawing participants and spectators for a day of swim lessons and safety demonstrations. Fire Chief Richard Stover spoke to the crowd, flanked by Brooke Bothun and Katie Gomiela from the Recreation Department. The collaboration aimed to emphasize water safety and drowning prevention in the community.
Over 200 residents attended the event, which included free swim lessons for children and adults. Lifeguards from the aquatic center demonstrated proper techniques for rescuing someone in distress, with a CPR demonstration conducted by Health First First Flight paramedics. A mock drowning rescue was performed by lifeguard Joshua Blow, who pulled Makaylah Fernly, a 9-year-old participant, from the pool using a life ring. The demonstration ended with paramedics taking Fernly to a staging area for further care.
The Palm Bay Fire Department set up a display showing how to use life-saving equipment, while Health First First Flight staff provided information on emergency response times in the area. Recreation Department officials said the event was part of a broader effort to reduce drowning incidents in Brevard County. “We want to make sure everyone knows how to stay safe in the water,” said a department spokesperson.
The aquatic center plans to host similar events monthly, with a focus on teaching basic swimming skills to underserved populations. The next session is scheduled for July 10, with registration open online. The event marked the first time the Palm Bay Aquatic Center has participated in the global initiative, which has been held annually since 2008.
